Classic Car Show

Cruisin' For A Cure is a large single-day car show where the proceeds from entry fees go directly to prostate cancer research. According to the Cruisin' For A Cure web site, not a penny goes to a car club, promoter, administration, or individuals. The show is organized by volunteers who work to organize this show and fundraiser in addition to their 'day jobs.'This charitable event which promotes itself as the "World's Largest Single Day Car Show" wrapped up a little more than a week ago and the final totals are in. The 7th Annual Cruisin' For A Cure show raised over $279,000 for the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center with over 3400 vehicles and over 200 vendors registering for the event. Those are not the only impressive numbers: over 970 men took advantage of the free Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test, a simple blood test that can detect the possibility of prostate problems. Next year the show will be held Saturday, September 22, on the Orange County Fairgrounds. The show plans on giving away a built Dearborn Downs Convertible Roadster designed by Chip Foose. Information on how to show your car, register as a vendor, pledge to the cause, or be a spectator can be found on the Cruisin' For A Cure website.

The Great Race is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2007, and the even will be held between June 30th and July 14th. This year, the Great Race will be held in two one-week legs. The first leg of the rally will start in Concord, North Carolina, head down to Irving, Texas. The second leg will start the next day in Irving and ends in Anaheim, California, for a total of 4,000 miles over the two week period. The coast-to-coast race is open to classic vehicles 1969 and older, including muscle cars and hot rods. Hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles are also allowed. To apply, download the official entry form by clicking here (PDF). You will need the entry fee, a biography of the driver and navigator, a color picture of the driver and navigator, and color pictures of the front, side, and rear views of the vehicle submitted. Unfortunately, the $1.37 in loose change sitting in the ashtray of my Plymouth isn't going to cut it. The pre-registration deadlines are past, and therefore the entry fees run $6,000 for rookie, $7,500 for veteran, $12,000 for corporate, and $25,000 for enhanced corporate. The final deadline for applications is June 24th, 2007.
